Solar thermal │ Roof mount │ Domestic water heating

Having finished designing and building an insulated concrete form home in rural Alberta, Neil and Jackie were on the lookout for an energy efficient solution to heat their hot water and supplement their space heating. After installing a five collector FREEDOM WON system, they're now averaging 90,000 kJ of solar thermal energy per day in the hot summer months. Their FREEDOM WON system serves as the capstone on a well designed and constructed building that showcases Neil and Jackie's pride in their home.
Installation date: 10 July 2020
Installer: Simple Solar
System size: 10.5 kW
"We are really impressed how slowly the hot water tank temperatures fall and then how quickly they recover after a couple of days of overcast cloud cover followed by  a clear sunny day

See how Neil & Jackie use their FREEDOM WON

The solar energy generated from the FREEDOM WON system is transferred to a solar tank where it's used to heat the household's domestic water. When hot water is required, the solar heated water in the solar tank flows into the boiler tank where, if necessary, the boiler can further heat the water. The FREEDOM WON system operates independently from the home's boiler heating system, meaning that whenever the sun shines the system will generate and store heat for when it's required.

If the solar tank is 50 °C or hotter when there is a call for boiler heating then a setpoint controller energizes the solar transfer pump to send heated fluid to the boiler from the solar tank's upper coil. The boiler will modulate down or not fire at all based on the temperature of the heating fluid from the solar tank. If the solar tank is less than 50 °C then the pump is not energized to transfer heat to the boiler.
